Maps in China: Test Places, Chinese Names, and Offline Use

Choose and test a map for China without assuming identical coverage, place data, route modes, or offline availability on every device and account.

Short answer

Test a map on the phone and account you will carry. Search the exact hotel and one station or venue, confirm the language and route modes, then save Chinese names and full addresses. Apple and Google say features and offline downloads vary by country or region; offline routes also lose functions. Keep a second map or written address for important transfers.

Do the three steps
Our recommendation

Test three real places before departure

Open the chosen map, find the exact hotel, one transport terminal, and one fixed venue using official Chinese names. Save the results and the official source text offline.

Use this when exact place recognition matters and live routing needs a backup.
Start here

Do these three things

These three actions cover the normal path. Special cases and deeper detail follow below.

  1. 1

Confirm the app on the real device

Check store availability, publisher, language, location permission, route modes, and any offline-download option on the account that will travel.

  2. 2

    Search exact official place names

Use the Chinese hotel, station, airport, or venue name from its official page or booking, not a shortened English label.

  3. 3

    Save an offline address pack

Keep the Chinese name, full address, nearest station, booking details, and a screenshot or text route outside the live map.

Choose the map setup

Which route can you verify on this device?

The useful map is the one that finds the correct place and shows the needed route mode under your device, region, and connection conditions.

LIVE MAP

Use online search and routing

Use this when the device has data, Precise Location where required, correct place data, and the needed route mode.

Check against the official place
OFFLINE MAP

Download a supported area

Use this only when the app offers the area. Confirm what route modes and features disappear without data.

ADDRESS CARD

Navigate with saved Chinese details

Use the official Chinese name and address at a staffed desk or signed taxi queue when the pin or route is unclear.

Ready check

You are ready when...

  • The chosen map opens on the actual travel device and account.
  • The exact hotel, one station, and one venue have been found and cross-checked.
  • You know which online and offline route modes are available on this setup.
  • Chinese names, addresses, and a staffed fallback are saved outside the map.
Optional detail

Special cases and detailed steps

Use these sections when the normal path does not fit your conditions. They cover exceptions, extra checks, and longer recovery steps.

Make the hotel your first test

Search the exact hotel name and address from the live booking. Then search one station, airport, or venue from its official page. A map that cannot separate these real places is not ready for the route.

Keep the full Chinese text. A short English label may point to a different branch, gate, station, or place with a similar name.

Check what offline really means

An offline area is useful only when the app offers that area and the whole route fits inside it. Feature limits can be important: Google states that offline transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable, while driving loses traffic and alternate routes.

Do not wait until landing to discover that the download option is missing for the account or region.

Cross-check critical places

Use the airport, railway, metro, hotel, or venue's official page for the exact name and address. The map is a navigation tool, not the authority for a station exit, venue entrance, or current service change.

If the map and official page disagree, stop and ask staff before starting a long or fixed-time journey.

Keep the route outside the app

Save the Chinese place name, full address, nearest station, booking reference, and a screenshot or text route. Put the most important arrival details in the offline arrival pack.

When a pin or live route is unclear, show the saved address at a staffed desk or signed taxi queue. This remains useful even when the phone has no data or location fix.

Help when needed

If something does not work

Match the issue to one recovery step, then move to the backup when time matters.

The English place name finds several results

Use the complete Chinese name and address from the official venue, operator, or live booking. Compare the district and nearby station before choosing a pin.

The offline download is unavailable

Country and regional support varies. Save Chinese names, addresses, screenshots, and text directions, then keep a second map or staffed route.

An offline route has no transit or walking option

This is an expected limitation in Google Maps offline guidance. Reconnect for live routing or use the saved operator route and staffed station help.

The map pin conflicts with the official page

Use the official station, airport, hotel, or venue name and address as the reference. Ask staff before starting a long or time-critical journey.

One simple backup

Save the hotel's Chinese name, full address, nearest station, and one screenshot or text route. Cross-check every critical terminal or venue against its official operator page. If the live pin or route remains unclear, show the Chinese address card at a staffed airport, railway, metro, hotel, or venue desk, or at a signed taxi queue.

Sources and currentnessReviewed 19 Jul 2026; next review due 19 Aug 2026

Recheck when it matters: Reopen the selected map and repeat the hotel, terminal, and venue searches. Confirm publisher, app version, language, location permission, offline-area availability, route modes, and the official Chinese place names. Station exits, live traffic, venue pins, and service changes need a fresh operator or venue check.

Quick questions

Frequently asked questions

Which map app works best in China?

No source here proves one universal winner. Test the exact hotel, terminal, venue, language, and route modes on your device and account before choosing.

Can I download an offline map for China?

It depends on the app, country or region, device, and area. Apple and Google both state that offline availability has regional limits. Test the exact area before travel.

Does an offline map provide transit and walking routes?

No. Google's current guidance says offline transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable, while driving loses traffic and alternate routes.

Why should I save the Chinese place name?

It reduces ambiguity when English names vary. It can also be shown at a staffed desk or signed taxi queue when the live map result is unclear.
