How to Use City Metros in China
Choose a city-specific fare method, read the line direction and exit correctly, and keep a staffed-ticket fallback.
Use each city's metro as its own system. Save the full station name, line, terminal direction, transfer, and exit in Chinese before you ride. For the first trip, a single-journey ticket or staffed counter is the lowest-dependency option. Check the local operator for fare methods and the last usable connection, then keep a taxi or ride-hailing fallback.
Do the three steps
Metro contextDirection and exit matter as much as the station name
Use the city-specific payment method, follow the line direction, and check the exit before leaving the paid area.
Use the lowest-dependency fare for the first ride.
Start with a single-journey ticket or staffed counter unless the city's current QR or card route is already working for your account. Save the route and exit before entering the system.
Do these three things
These three actions cover the normal path. Special cases and deeper detail follow below.
- 1
Save the complete route
Keep the station, line, terminal direction, transfer, exit, and final address in Chinese.
- 2
Choose a city-specific fare
Check the local operator, then use a single ticket, local pass, or working transport QR with a staffed fallback.
- 3
Check the last usable connection
Include security, walking, transfers, and the final train needed to complete the whole route.
Use the simplest fare method that fits this city
Metro payment and QR rules are local. Do not assume a setup from one city will work in another.
Single-journey ticket
Buy at a machine or staffed counter using a payment method accepted by that station.
Local transport card or pass
Consider it after checking the city's current purchase, deposit, and refund rules.
City transport QR
Use only after the correct city, account prompts, identity checks, and payment route are working.
See how to read metro signs one decision at a time
This 18-second AI demonstration teaches a sign-reading pattern, not live directions. Station names, line colors, terminal directions, platforms, exits, and landmarks differ by city and station.
- 1Save the complete destination station in English and Chinese.
- 2Match the line and terminal direction again on the platform.
- 3Choose the exit after arrival, then ask staff if the signs stop matching.
You are ready when...
- The full route is saved with the line, terminal direction, transfer, and exit.
- The final destination and useful station name are available in Chinese.
- One fare method works for that city and a staffed-ticket fallback is clear.
- The last usable connection and a late-travel road fallback have been checked.
Special cases and detailed steps
These sections cover device, account, booking, and travel-day conditions outside the normal path.
Choose the station and exit before you enter
A station name is not the final destination. Large interchange stations can have many exits on opposite sides of roads, blocks, or railway terminals. Save both the station and the exit nearest the actual address.
Keep the Chinese station name and final street address available as selectable text or an offline note. Compare the route with the complete railway station or airport terminal name when making a connection.
Use the simplest fare method that works in that city
The government guide says foreign visitors can buy single-journey tickets at a metro ticket office or self-service machine. It also describes local passes and Alipay transport QR codes, but the exact card acceptance, identity prompt, and QR availability depend on the city and account.
For one or two rides, a single ticket can be more reliable than solving an account problem at the gate. For repeated rides, compare the local pass or QR route only after confirming the current operator instructions.
- Check the station's accepted payment signs
- Select the exact destination station at the counter or machine
- Keep the ticket, card, or active QR available until after exit
- Use the staffed service point if the gate does not process it
Read the direction by the line's terminal station
Platforms often identify direction using the terminal station at that end of the line. Match the line, terminal direction, and next station rather than relying only on a compass direction.
At an interchange, follow the next line number and terminal direction. Recheck the platform display before boarding because branches, express patterns, or temporary changes can alter the expected route.
Allow for security, gates, transfers, and the final walk
Expect station entry, a possible bag security check, fare gates, platform access, transfers, exit gates, and the walk from the selected exit. Airport and railway-station connections can take longer than the train time shown by a map.
Keep luggage clear of closing doors and follow local signs. Ask station staff before passing a gate if the route, ticket, or accessibility path is unclear.
Check the last usable connection, not only the last departure
The last train from the first station may not leave enough time for the required transfer. Check the full route on the official operator page and leave a margin for security, walking, and finding the platform.
For a late arrival, save a ride-hailing or official taxi fallback before entering the system. Do not assume an airport line follows the same hours as the rest of the network.
If something does not work
Match the issue to one recovery step, then move to the backup when time matters.
The transport QR code will not open.
Check the selected city and network once, then use a station machine or staffed counter instead of blocking the gate.
A foreign card is rejected.
Use another method shown by the station or buy a single ticket with an accepted payment method. Card acceptance is not uniform across cities.
You board in the wrong direction.
Get off at the next safe station, check the terminal direction, and recalculate before changing platforms.
The planned transfer has closed.
Ask station staff for the remaining route, then use the saved ride-hailing or official taxi fallback if the journey cannot be completed.
If the QR, card, or foreign payment route fails, buy a single-journey ticket at a machine or staffed counter. For a closed connection, use the saved official taxi or ride-hailing route.

Recheck when it matters: Fare products, accepted cards, transport QR codes, first and last trains, security procedures, and accessibility support are city- and line-specific. Check the local operator and station signage.

Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners buy metro tickets in China?
Yes. The current government guide says foreign visitors can buy single-journey tickets at metro ticket offices or self-service machines. Exact payment methods depend on the city and station.
Can I use Alipay for every metro in China?
Some cities support an Alipay transport QR after the required setup, but availability and identity prompts vary. Select the correct city and keep a station-ticket fallback.
Can I tap a foreign bank card at metro gates?
Do not assume nationwide acceptance. Some systems, including Beijing under its current rules, support specific overseas cards, but each city publishes its own conditions.
How do I avoid taking the metro in the wrong direction?
Match the line and the terminal station shown for the direction, then confirm the next station on the platform display before boarding.
