Choose a workable base

Where to Stay in Shanghai for a First Trip

Compare three practical Shanghai bases, confirm the exact hotel and nearest station, and keep the Chinese address offline.

Short answer

Choose one Shanghai base that reduces the journeys you will actually make. Confirm the exact property can complete your check-in, then save its full Chinese address, nearest station, exit, and late-arrival contact offline.

Choose the river side and airport route together

People's Square and Jing'an keep many first-trip days in Puxi. Lujiazui works for a Pudong-focused stay, but repeated historic-center days add river crossings. Compare the exact hotel with PVG, SHA, or Hongqiao Station before booking.

Prepare in this order

  1. 1

Choose the useful side of the river

Mark the PVG or Hongqiao arrival, fixed Puxi or Pudong days, and the departure hub. Count real river crossings instead of choosing from the skyline.

  2. 2

Check the property entrance and metro exit

For People's Square, Jing'an, or Lujiazui, compare the exact walk, useful exit, luggage route, and late return—not only the neighborhood name.

  3. 3

    Save the late-arrival handoff

Confirm reception and the document route, then keep the full Chinese address, property contact, nearest useful exit, and current airport or station road backup offline.

Compare the workable routes

CENTRAL FIRST TRIP

People's Square

A central metro base for a first visit. Check the exact property entrance and exit.

TRANSPORT BALANCE

Jing'an

Useful for western central neighborhoods, food, and several transport choices.

ROUTE-SPECIFIC BASE

Lujiazui

A modern Pudong base; most historic Puxi days require a river crossing.

Save the complete English and Chinese names

Copy the live booking or operator wording. A city name alone is not a station, airport, terminal, entrance, or hotel address.

If the first plan fails

The hotel is on the wrong side of the river for most fixed days

Count the real crossings and late returns. If they dominate the plan, compare a property near the useful Puxi or Pudong corridor instead of keeping the district label.

People's Square or Jing'an has too many possible exits

Save the exact property entrance and the nearest useful station exit. Do not rely on the neighborhood name for the final walk.

The airport or Hongqiao arrival becomes late

Confirm reception, remove the evening block, and use the complete Chinese address with the current signed transport fallback.

One simple backup

Keep one directly confirmed alternative on the same side of the river and near the same useful metro corridor until the primary property's entrance and late-arrival route are confirmed.
